Pandemic Flu Planning and Preparation
Loudon County Schools in collaboration with the Loudon County Health Department is is in the Process of creating a System-wide Plan for actions to be taken at the district and School level in the event of a Pandemic flu outbreak in our area.( 9/12/06 )
One of the most
effective measures to prevent the spread of flu and other illnesses is proper
and frequent hand washing. All our K-8 Schools, the Family Resource Center
Programs, and selected classes in high school, teach proper hand washing using
the
Glitterbug
Kit
from
Brevis Corporation.

Seasonal (or common) flu
is a respiratory
illness that can be transmitted person to person. Most people have some
immunity, and a vaccine is available.
Avian (or bird)
flu is
caused by influenza viruses that occur naturally among wild
birds. The H5N1 variant is deadly to domestic fowl and can be transmitted from
birds to humans. There is no human immunity and no vaccine is available.
Pandemic flu
is virulent human flu
that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Because there
is little natural immunity, the disease can spread easily from person to
person. Currently, there is no pandemic flu.
